What Are You Afraid Of? is more than a story to help children overcome
their fears. What Are You Afraid Of? is a book about acknowledging a children's
fears and dealing with them in ways that do not stifle a child's imagination and
creativity. So, indulge me while I state a few ideas.

Children can easily be made to feel small and defenseless in this big
world, while at the same time, children have very vivid imaginations, which
can cause further anxiety over things that are intangible, confusing, and scary.
Therefore, how we deal with a child's fears may have tremendous implications
on how we foster, or hinder, their creative growth.

While fear can be a manifestation of imagination, so too can compassion
and empathy. Compassion is a product of the imagination as well, being able to
‘see’ ourselves in another’s shoes. So, it only stands to reason, that if we stifle
the imagination, we may be stifling the child’s potential to care for the world
around him later on. A creative mind is a terrible thing to waste.

We all know that fears or phobias cannot be easily coerced away by mere
rational or logical arguments. Instead, it seems a better approach to
acknowledge a child's fears and show him or her that you know how he or she
feels. We can try to diminish the fears by making light of it and making the
child laugh. Ah, laughter is the best medicine! I have read psychologists who
recommend playing with fears by role playing until the child laughs or by
drawing silly pictures of the object of the fear with the same intention.

With all of this in mind, I came up with this story. I hope the idea of a big
dog being afraid of witches and ghosts is silly enough to begin with, along with
the playful Halloween-ish images and the funny rhyming patterns. But more, I
hope the games the old comes up with will be games your child can also play to
eliminate his or her own fears. Most of all, I wish for you and your child to
enjoy the story. May you laugh!

Never having read any of Kiki’s books before, I was a tad unprepared for the exquisiteness of her story telling. The way she used colloquialisms that pertained to a period piece was extremely impressive. Kiki managed to convey the characters as real people, complete with flaws, which a lot of authors don’t always capture. I loved the way that Kiki was able to build up some steamy heat between the two characters without crossing over into modern terminology. Her descriptions of the settings were well done and not once did I feel that I could not imagine them in my mind and that is a big bonus. I have been given the chance to review the Woman’s Plus Glamour Witch Costume from Sexual Fantasy Boutique. First off, I can say that in this exquisite dress you do feel just like the product description says, “bewitching.” You feel as if you could cast a spell over, or enchant, the man of your choice. *giggles evily* Ah, I could be one of my heroines easily. Let's hear it for role-playing right?

On another note, the package arrived with extra-ordinary speed as well.

The short dress falls really well over all the curves. For one often – believe it or not with what I do for a living – shy and self-conscious, it worked for me. Besides, it is much cuter in person. The picture does not show very well the beautiful tiny black sparkles all over the dress or the lay of the silver sparkles which adorn the empire waist and straps. The halter had enough tie to feel that you were safe for it to stay tied, of course if that is what you wish. LOL I loved the way the skirt kind-of bubbles around the knees, and the hat is made the same way. A very cute addition, and unlike many costume hats, it actually fit snuggly on my head and stayed put.

I am always leery of the sizing with these things. Being ever-around a size 14 myself, this dress actually fit, but it just fit. So I would say it is close to true to size, but maybe a touch small as they do seem to run in my experience. Just a word of caution on sizing, it in no way diminishes the outfit. I am more than happy with it. I think I feel another witchy, erotic story coming on. Thanks for the inspiration :)

Caught Under The October Moon

The meshing colors of the fallen autumn leaves crackled under the weight of her bare feet similar in sound to the fire that burgeoned around the stack of dry logs before her. Once she felt the heat infiltrate her body, she shed her deep burgundy, velvet cloak and watched as it fell to the ground like pouring wine. Turning, she lit the red candles and spicy incenses of cinnamon and ginger on her makeshift altar. The small flames threw flickers of light that danced upon the various fruits and vegetables that decorated the tree stump. Lost in her rituals under the light of the October Blood Moon coming through the thinning canopies of the treetops, she neglected to hear the approaching footsteps.

The final shift of the brush as a man came into her clearing startled her. She turned on her visitor. Forgetting that she was standing there fully exposed, she stared into the eyes of Mitch, a friend from her apartment building two floors up and one door over. Despite the fact that she had developed many quaint friendships, no one there knew that she was a witch.

“What are you doing here?” She asked reluctantly, as she followed his eyes down over the erect nipples of her breasts to the small patch of hair between her thighs. Unable to avoid turning to get her robe, she was forced to display her backside to him also.

“I saw a cloaked figure enter the woods and debated about checking it out until I saw the flickers of light through the trees.” She blushed as he had stumbled over the words. “I couldn’t sleep. What are you doing here at three o’clock in the morning?”

Thoughts rushed through her mind as to if he would approve or disapprove of her Wiccan ways. She momentarily felt like a trapped animal as he took a few steps towards her to get closer to the fire. His baggy, wrinkled sweatshirt didn’t prevent her from being distracted by the images of him shirtless this summer.

“Listen, Brianna, you don’t have to be afraid to tell me. I won’t judge you. You know I’m not like that.” He turned to face her then grabbing the front of her robe gently with his hands and fondling the crushed velvet between his fingers. “Will you feel better if I confess something first?”

“I don’t know.” Her voice sounded strange even to her as apprehension and excitement commingled making her insides tremble. The smell of him drifted over the short distance between them, and she closed her eyes as she took it in. She could never deny to herself the attraction she had to him, but he had never made any advances before to show her he felt the same.

“Then here goes.” He stepped in making his hands, still holding her robe, press up against her abs; and her hands, still holding her robe protectively closed, touch his hard chest. “I have wanted to be alone with you, since the first time I met you, so that I could see how you would react if I did this…”

The warmth of his breath brushed over her face before the fullness of his lips surrounded hers. He brought his hands up into her hair, and the chill of his fingertips felt like pure magical energy.

Mitch kissed her cheek, and whispered in her ear, “Relax, Brianna. I won’t do anything you don’t want me to.”

“Somehow that doesn’t make me feel better.” She became acutely aware again of her nakedness under her robe as heat pulsed through her core moistening her with desire.

“Now why are you out in the woods in the middle of the night buck naked? I can’t get that image of you out of my mind.” He pulled her against him tighter, and she let her pinned arms move to her sides allowing his jean-covered hardness to touch the skin of her stomach where her robe had opened slightly.

“I am Wiccan, and I was celebrating the Esbat of the October full moon.” She dared to let her hands move onto his hips as she spoke liking the way they felt against one another.

“I like holding you, and I am thrilled that you are not pulling away.”

“Then it doesn’t matter to you that…” A kiss interrupted her question. He penetrated her lips with his tongue and swept it over hers.

“That you are a witch? No, you can explain that more later. All I can think about now is getting my hands under your robe.”

She felt her smile all through her body. “Then touch me,” she said as she withdrew from his embrace and let her robe cascade to the ground again.

He didn’t immediately come to her. First, he slowly unclothed himself barely taking his eyes from her body. She liked the way it felt, to be exposed to him. The thoughts she’d secretly had of them together over these past months welled up within her as his palms cupped over her breasts. He kissed her briefly again before cradling her body to his and guiding her down to the ground to lie upon their discarded clothing. Leaves crunched and slim branches cracked as he spread apart her thighs and tasted her. The feeling of his tongue separating her nether lips made her give thanks again to that moon above her for the bounty she had been given. She reached out to finally touch his hardness as he kissed up her body and over her nipples.

Just before the thickness of his member entered her wetness, he said, “I feared this moment would never happen.”

“Anything can happen under the full moon.”

Poised on a stool in a corner of yet another bar, in front of a crowd of maybe fifty, the harmonies he played reached out to those around him. The rhythms in his head stirred his heart. For a man of magic, a sorcerer with powers he had never asked for, his musical talents were sung spells. They were his weapon of defense against loneliness, bringing people to him like a siren’s song. Yet, for the most part, he let his music haunt the deeper needs of those who listened—letting musical phrasings stir wants unnamed or purposely forgotten. Although he felt but a living and breathing jukebox, these strangers who came to see him play were the only lives he could touch. He reached out to them with his songs.

That is until one night one of Adam’s songs lures him back toward his hometown, and he calls out for Stacey, the one he was forced to leave behind all those years ago. Only this time she wants answers as to why he left, and maybe a bit of revenge for the heart he destroyed.

I wrote The Sorcerer’s Songs using my husband's song lyrics to create the plot. It was a lot of fun to write, and a great writing exercise! In Memory Of My First Fan

Just before Thanksgiving last year, I lost a friend. I am still having a hard time dealing with it, and her death has left me questioning things in new ways. As of right now, I haven't come to any sense of peace with the loss I know so many feel, and I ache for the three little children she left behind.

That said, I have found some comfort in my memories which is why I am posting this here. She called herself my "first fan." I had taken about a decade break from writing when I had my children. Getting back into it was scary, of course. Carolyn always encouraged me, and therefore she was my only friend to read that first manuscript. She took this "honor" as she called it very seriously. She called me with her page of notes after. She gave me the honesty I needed, good and bad for which I will ever be grateful. That was one of the first stories I sent out, and so it was also one of my first rejections. But, my friend was so encouraging. She said, with her unfailing faith in me, that when it did get published she wanted a signed copy that was written to "my first fan."

When I did get my first contract (which was not for that first story, of course) I will never forget the moment I told her. It was outside of our son's school, and she shook and cried with her excitement as she hugged me. Her reaction touched me and will ever stand out in my mind when I think of that time. I have the picture you see here of us hanging up in my house so that it is the first thing I see when I walk into my writing room.

In January of 2009, I got to hold my first print book in my hand. And, in that anthology was a greatly revised version of that first story Carolyn read for me. It made it even more bittersweet. Despite my unanswered questions, I will always keep with me her enthusiasm, her support and her love to just name a few things that made her the amazing spirit that she was to so many. She was such a gift, ask anyone who knew her. She touched so many. Now, I can't give her that signed copy, so I guess I am writing it here to her instead.

I could tell the author has done her research concerning Wiccan rites. As a result of the author’s attention to detail and excellent writing, I would definitely love to read more of this author’s work as well as read other books along the line of this genre.

Now…I love a steamy love story…and, boy did “Rituals” deliver!!! It wasn’t steamy, it was scorching!!! Did I say scorching? I meant blistering!!! The love scenes with the bondage were explicit, and I loved them because of how the author tied (pun unintended!) it into Maddie’s past; essentially her foray into the world of bondage was a way to set her inhibitions free. I loved it!!! I also love when two best friends all of a sudden start to see each other with new eyes. As the reader, I know they already have a solid foundation of love, the passion is just another layer. This added credibility to the love story when they did fall in love.

“Rituals” has all the components I need in a love story to keep me glued to the pages: love, lust, and suspense. Author Bio:

Ever since she was young, Kiki Howell has loved to listen to a well-woven tale with real characters, inspired plots, and delightful resolutions. Kiki could spend hours lost in a book, and soon she knew that creating lives, loves, and losses with just words had to be the greatest thing that she could do. To that end, she pursued her study of literature and writing, earning a bachelor’s degree in English. She then followed in a Master’s program in Creative Writing.

“After a long break having my boys, I finally just had to write again. And, as soon as I gave the stories the space, they entered it. It’s both awesome and humbling to find the words in my mind become characters on a page and create their lives.”

She has now had over twenty stories published between seven different small presses. She could not be more thrilled or grateful to see her creations polished and out in the real world. Please look around. Although, a bit of caution, most of her stories tend to hang out on the graphically sexy side of town.

In May, 2011, Kiki was chosen as an Ohioana Book Festival author for her novel, Torn Asunder.

Kiki resides in the Midwest with her incredibly handsome and talented, singer/songwriter husband and two children. When she is not writing, she is spending time with her family, reading, baking or knitting.

Her biggest dream is to have a novel she writes be made into a movie that her husband creates the soundtrack for, and then cruise to Alaska with her family on the money they make.
